History at Ladybarn

Intent
Our History incorporates the expectations of the National Curriculum and has been extended to explore modern day historical periods to enable the children to develop their understanding of the shaping of modern-day Manchester and the UK.
EYFS
In EYFS, we talk about how we were babies in the past and now we are children who will grow into adults. We use our own baby pictures to show our very own timeline!
Year 1
In year 1 , in one of the units we study we learn about what life was like in the Victorian times compared to how we live now. We visited the Portland Basin and experienced a Victorian Classroom.
Year 2
In one of the Year 2 units we look at, we learn about the impact Romans had on Britain and how powerful their army was.
Year 3
In year 3, in one of the units we study we learn all about the Vikings and how their lives compare to modern life. I know how the Vikings shaped History.
Year 4
In year 4, in one of the units we study we look at The British Empire and the start of the slave trade. We went to the Slavery Museum in Liverpool and learnt about the lives of enslaved people like Oloudah Equiano and how he overcame barriers to become a free man, moved to England and helped abolish slavery.
Year 5
In one of the year 5 units, we learn about World War 2, who was involved and why it happened. We discuss propaganda and know that key events, like the holocaust and Nagasaki, happened.
Year 6
In one of the units we study in Year 6 we Explore modern day historical periods to enable the children to develop their understanding of the shaping of modern-day Manchester and the UK. I know the origins of Manchester and some of the major events that shaped our home city.
